Averda partners with the DP World Tour Championship to achieve a ‘green’ golf tournament

Dubai, U.A.E: For the fourth year in a row, averda, the leading integrated environmental solutions company in the Middle East and North Africa, is the waste management partner of the DP World Tour Championship (DPWTC) currently taking place from Thursday November 20 to Sunday November 23 at Jumeirah Golf Estates.

“We were impressed by averda’s programme last year to encourage and educate golf enthusiasts on recycling. Their efforts are and continue to be in line with the European Tour’s Green Drive campaign, which aims to minimise the impact on the environment. averda’s team demonstrates their commitment to the environment and they continue to meet our high European standards on sustainability. This is one of the many reasons why we are happy to partner with averda for another year,” stated Damian Turner, The European Tour Operations Director in Dubai.

During the DPWTC 2013 event last year, averda worked closely with the event organisers, vendors and participants to spread awareness on the best practices of recycling. With the help of the attendees and volunteers, averda recycled over five tonnes of plastic bottles and aluminium cans, and reused fifteen tonnes of biodegradables.

This year averda will be providing 150 coloured bins throughout the venue to collect more recyclable items. The coloured bins, green bins for organic waste and black bins for disposable waste, will help attendees separate their waste with little effort.

averda will also be installing the Reverse Vending Machines (RVM) at the event venue this year. The machines were developed to educate and inspire individuals to recycle while being rewarded in the process. The RVM machines were installed throughout the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and retrieved over 1.2 million recyclables across the region. During the golf tournament event last year, 50,000 attendees returned 75,000 bottles and cans to the machine, and 500 averda branded golf balls were given as a reward to those who participated.

“averda is committed to making our community a better place to live with our environmental awareness programmes and recycling solutions. We believe that even during fun sporting events there is an opportunity to engage and involve the esteemed public to do their part in reducing waste to landfill. Through increasing understanding of environmental best practices in communities, we believe we can change consumer behaviour towards recycling and support the UAE in achieving its goal of green status by 2030,” said Jeroen Vincent, Chief Operating Officer of the GCC for averda.

Dubai (UAE): Defending champion Henrik Stenson will go head-to-head with World Number One and 2014 Race to Dubai winner Rory McIlroy when the DP World Tour Championship gets underway in Dubai today (Thursday) with the Swede intent on spoiling McIlroy’s coronation at Jumeirah Golf Estates.

Twelve months ago, Stenson lit up the Earth course with a stunning six-shot victory over England’s Ian Poulter setting a tournament record of 25-under par in the process.

But the Iceman knows that will count for nothing when the top 60 players on The European Tour do battle for the final title of the 2014 season.

“Even though I shot -25 last year, I can’t think about that this week,” said Stenson. “The ball doesn’t know what we did last year – it has to be told. I’m not guaranteed anything just because I played well last year. Yes, I know how to play this course but I still have to do it, stay focused and patient and do it all over again.”

Stenson and McIlroy will be the final two-ball of the day and sure to attract the largest gallery of the day at Jumeirah Golf Estates when they tee off at 12.30pm.

“Last year was very special and while I know it can’t be as special this year because Rory has already won the overall Race to Dubai, I can make it a very special week for myself by playing well here and hopefully giving myself a chance to win,” added Stenson. “I haven’t successfully defended a title yet, so I couldn’t think of a much better place to do it than here this week.”

With McIlroy already home and dry in the standings, all eyes will be on the battle for second place, currently occupied by Stenson but with a clutch of stars including Welshman Jamie Donaldson, Germany’s Marcel Siem and Sergio Garcia of Spain breathing down his neck.

However, with so many points available to the tournament winner, Stenson’s Ryder Cup team-mate and great rival Ian Poulter is also well in the hunt – something many would have considered highly improbable just a few weeks back.

But a successful recent run of form in the Final Series has seen Poulter make a late season charge and he now has his sights firmly set on wrestling second place from the Swede.

“I feel good about what’s happened the last couple of weeks,” said Poulter, on the eve of his opening round. “Number one is gone but there is still a big bonus for being number two and that would upset the current number two who is Mr Stenson – so I’ll be chasing him down like I was chasing him down last year. Bring it on!”

It has been a remarkable run by Poulter who ranked 64th on The Race to Dubai two weeks ago but who is now up to 13th after a share of sixth place at the WGC-HSBC Champions event in Shanghai and a second place finish at last week’s Turkish Airlines Open by the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

“It’s nice to come into this stretch and feel I can salvage something in 2014. After finishing sixth then second, it would be nice to win this week and move nicely up that board so that has to be the aim this week.”

If Poulter were to triumph this week, he may offer a word of thanks to two-time Major winner Greg Norman. The Australian recently offered Poulter some putting advice and the Englishman is keen to see if the tips will make a difference when he takes on  the challenge of the 7,675-yard Earth course, designed by Norman himself.

“It was nice to Greg to reach out and I will take on board what he said but I’ve been working hard on my putting so I’ll get on the putting green today and see if what he said is right or wring,” said Poulter, who finished runner-up at the DP World Tour Championship in both 2010 and 2013.

Play gets underway at 7.30am today (Thursday) with Italy’s Matteo Manassero and England’s Mathew Baldwin getting the tournament up and running. Poulter will get his challenge underway at 11.30am alongside Holland’s Joost Luiten before a host of Ryder Cup stars join up for a mouthwatering finale to the season, including Martin Kaymer pairing with Graeme McDowell (11.40am) and Victor Dubuisson playing with Thomas Bjorn (11.50am).

Henrik, Justin and Rory re-enact Greatest Moments on Earth

during the official opening of the new club house at the Jumeirah Golf Estates prior to the DP World Tour Championship on November 17, 2014 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Dubai (UAE): There have been a number of spectacular moments of high drama and excitement in the short but colourful history of the DP World Tour Championship, which provides the annual climax to The European Tour’s Race to Dubai.

This week, three of the world’s best golfers returned to the scene of their magical shotmaking to try to re-create some of their personal favourite highlights in a Made for TV Challenge headlined as the Greatest Moments on Earth.

The Earth in question is the stunning Earth course, which is hosting the sixth edition of the DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates, and the golfers in question need little introduction – World Number Rory McIlroy, defending champion Henrik Stenson and 2013 US Open Champion Justin Rose.

The trio of champions congregated at the par five 18th hole on the Earth course, which has seen its share of thrills and spills since 2009.

And the ‘banter’ flowed as naturally as the golf swings of three players who have put their stamp on the event in recent years, in the case of McIlroy and Stenson culminating in victories in The Race to Dubai in 2012 and 2013 respectively.

Stenson, the official brand ambassador for Jumeirah Golf Estates, sealed victory last year by smashing a three wood 248 yards into the wind to a matter of inches from the pin for a sensational eagle three.

That feat was recognised by Jumeirah Golf Estates with a plaque embedded into the precise spot in the fairway which will now forever carry a permanent memory of the stroke which was voted The European Tour Shot of the Year.

Neal Graham, General Manager of Jumeirah Golf Estates, marked the occasion with a handshake before McIlroy and Rose attempted the same shot – and it was the World Number One who rose to the challenge with a stunning shot.

McIlroy and Stenson then re-enacted the 75 foot putt Rose had from the back of the 18th green, which almost stopped on the ‘shelf’ then finish within one turn of the ball while Rose and Stenson then attempted the 18 foot putt which McIlroy sank on the 18th to close out victory with his fifth straight birdie.

As Stenson remarked at the end:“Let’s make some more memories this week”.

The DP World Tour Championship a great day out for all the family

Dubai (UAE):The great thing about the DP World Tour Championship, taking place at Jumeirah Golf Estates this week from 20 -23 November, is that you don’t need to be a golf nut to enjoy it. The event is renowned in the region for being one of the best days out on the social calendar for all the family, with plenty to do besides watch The European Tour’s finest players in action.

Most of the off-course activities centre around the bustling Championship Village where there are a mouth-watering selection of food and beverage outlets on offer: BBQ Grill, N_K_D Pizza, Fish & Chips, Costa Coffee, Amstel Light Sports Bar, Patron Bar, Baskin Robins, Hot Dog Stand, Organic, Melt and the Mouton Cadet Bar. You can also purchase the full range of tournament and Race to Dubai branded merchandise while many spectators like to come here just to kick back for a while and relax on the beanbags watching the action on the giant screen.

There’s the Kids Zone where the young ones can play on bouncy castles or on the tennis court – there’s also Short Golf with ‘introduction to golf’ sessions for children aged 6 and above. Free golf lessons are available from Thursday to Sunday from 9.00am – 5.00pm, courtesy of the Emirates Golf Federation in conjunction with the R&A, as well as a Titleist 915 Long Drive Contest.

Out on the range, just outside the entrance to the Championship Village, renowned golf trick shot artist David Edwards will be entertaining the crowds each day with his phenomenal stunts and when play is finished you can rock out to the sounds of popular local bands Maplejacks and Suburban Voodoo.

The DP World Tour Championship not only offers some of the best golfing action you’ll see all year but also some of the best entertainment,” says Nick Tarratt, Director of The European Tour International Dubai Office.  “We get the diehard golf fans who come to see the top 60 players in The Race to Dubai doing battle but we also get friends and family who just enjoy the event as a great day out with lots to do and see over and above the golf.”
