Dubai (UAE): There have been a number of spectacular moments of high drama and excitement in the short but colourful history of the DP World Tour Championship, which provides the annual climax to The European Tour’s Race to Dubai.
This week, three of the world’s best golfers returned to the scene of their magical shotmaking to try to re-create some of their personal favourite highlights in a Made for TV Challenge headlined as the Greatest Moments on Earth.
The Earth in question is the stunning Earth course, which is hosting the sixth edition of the DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates, and the golfers in question need little introduction – World Number Rory McIlroy, defending champion Henrik Stenson and 2013 US Open Champion Justin Rose.
The trio of champions congregated at the par five 18th hole on the Earth course, which has seen its share of thrills and spills since 2009.
And the ‘banter’ flowed as naturally as the golf swings of three players who have put their stamp on the event in recent years, in the case of McIlroy and Stenson culminating in victories in The Race to Dubai in 2012 and 2013 respectively.
Stenson, the official brand ambassador for Jumeirah Golf Estates, sealed victory last year by smashing a three wood 248 yards into the wind to a matter of inches from the pin for a sensational eagle three.
That feat was recognised by Jumeirah Golf Estates with a plaque embedded into the precise spot in the fairway which will now forever carry a permanent memory of the stroke which was voted The European Tour Shot of the Year.
Neal Graham, General Manager of Jumeirah Golf Estates, marked the occasion with a handshake before McIlroy and Rose attempted the same shot – and it was the World Number One who rose to the challenge with a stunning shot.
McIlroy and Stenson then re-enacted the 75 foot putt Rose had from the back of the 18th green, which almost stopped on the ‘shelf’ then finish within one turn of the ball while Rose and Stenson then attempted the 18 foot putt which McIlroy sank on the 18th to close out victory with his fifth straight birdie.
As Stenson remarked at the end:“Let’s make some more memories this week”.
